Cristiano Ronaldo has called for lifetime stadium bans for supporters who appeared to chant Diogo Jota’s name at Ruben Neves during a Saudi Pro League game on Sunday.
The incident took place on Saturday in Buraidah, during a Saudi Pro League fixture between Al Taawon and Neves’ Al Hilal.
The Liverpool forward was killed on July 3rd, 2025, in a road accident in Zamora, northwest Spain, with his brother Andre Silva also passing away. Neves was among those who carried Jota’s coffin at the funeral.
Fan-shot footage from the stands that spread on social media appeared to capture supporters chanting 'Jota' during the game.
The chants caught Neves' attention, and he responded by pointing to his eye and then up toward the sky.
Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, Neves said: “I hope they don't go to pray afterwards.”
Ronaldo later responded to an Instagram post featuring the footage, commenting from his verified account.
“The league must take action and punish this kind of fan behaviour,” said Ronaldo.
“This is no longer football, and there have to be limits. People who behave like this should never be allowed to enter a stadium again.”
The match ended in a 6-0 rout for Al Hilal. Neves was withdrawn after 75 minutes.
