A late equaliser from Patrik Schick saw Leverkusen salvage a 2-2 draw at the WWK Arena, stopping Augsburg from making history with three wins from three and moving Xabi Alonso’s side to sixth.
Leverkusen came out firing and had early chances through Moussa Diaby, Ezequiel Fernández and Ibrahim Maza inside the opening 15 minutes.
The breakthrough came as Kofane ran onto Tapsoba’s raking pass and calmly finished beyond Dahmen, who was marking his 100th league game in the Augsburg goal.
Apart from one early Arijon Ibrahimovic chance, Augsburg were pinned back for most of the first half.
Leverkusen racked up eight shots before the break and were completely on top. The quiet stadium reflected Augsburg’s struggles to get going.
Noahkai Banks was the one Augsburg player to stand out in the first half, though he took some shine off it with a yellow card right before the break.
Aleix García kept pulling the strings for Leverkusen against an Augsburg side all over the place, until a rare mistake changed everything. A hesitant Mark Flekken let Michael Gregoritsch in to poke the ball over the line.
Two minutes later it was 2-0. Gregoritsch was left unmarked and headed in from a corner to double Augsburg’s lead.
Leverkusen thought they had pulled one back just before the hour mark, but VAR intervened and ruled it out for a foul as the game really sparked into life.
