Wallabies lock Miles Amatosero has been handed a three-week ban from all rugby after a dangerous tackle on Japan.

The red card came in the 33rd minute of Saturday’s match during his first start for Australia. Amatosero was dismissed for a high hit on Japan’s Warner Dearns, in a game the Wallabies went on to win 35-32.

The SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) ruled the incident as “an act of foul play” and set the baseline penalty at a mid-range entry point of six weeks.

That six-week ban was reduced to three matches after Amatosero entered a guilty plea, showed remorse, and had a clean disciplinary record.

Amatosero can get the suspension cut to two weeks if he completes a World Rugby coaching programme  often called ‘tackle school’ – which targets the technique issues that led to the red card.

He will miss this weekend’s home Test against Japan in Townsville and Gordon’s Shute Shield semi-final on Saturday, 22 August. If he takes part in the intervention programme, he’ll be cleared to play for Australia in their away match in Argentina on 29 August.
