Jose Mourinho applauded Real Madrid’s effort and mentality after their 2-2 pre-season stalemate with Fiorentina, saying he’s been impressed with the squad’s attitude since the first day of training.

The Portuguese coach said the game had “three different phases,” but highlighted the quality Madrid showed before halftime as the standout part of the display.

Mourinho said Madrid should have been 3 or 4 goals up by halftime following a dominant start to the match.

“This is Real Madrid with the players we have. Like I told the players before kickoff, Real Madrid is Real Madrid,” Mourinho said on the club’s website.

“Whether it’s a friendly or a training match, it’s Real Madrid. We have to seek evolution but also achieve results to honour our history. I had to put on the field the men I had available.

“I had to pair Trent and Dumfries together and try to find a dynamic that would allow this style of play. 

“We only worked yesterday in preparation for the match because the goal is not to work on just one game.

“We did a little organisational work to have a team that knows what to do on the field. I am very happy with the work of the boys from day one.”
