In his second game in charge, Jose Mourinho watched Real Madrid race into an early lead only to let it slip in a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina.

It was Real Madrid’s first serious pre-season friendly, and the early signs were very promising.

Mourinho rolled the dice against Fiorentina. He gave three academy players starts and, in a surprise move, used Denzel Dumfries on the right wing instead of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The decisions worked early on.

The formation freed up Arda Guler in the No.10 spot in Mourinho’s trademark 4-2-3-1. In the 12th minute he combined with Alvaro Carreras, whose low cross found Endrick. With his first opportunity, the Brazilian showed great movement in the box and fired a low angled finish past David de Gea.

Less than 15 minutes later, Endrick was at it again. His run pulled two Fiorentina defenders out of position, letting Eduardo Camavinga slip in academy forward Alexis Ciria for a simple tap-in to make it 2-0 to Real Madrid.

Endrick is back in training ahead of schedule, has been the hardest worker in the squad, and is now pushing to be Mbappe’s first backup, or even his strike partner.

Beyond the standout players, Real Madrid’s high press stood out. Everyone bought in and worked hard to win the ball back high up the pitch.

Most of the big names are still yet to return and settle into the new system, but Mourinho’s fingerprints are already there. This Real Madrid side looks ready to outwork last year’s team, with more intensity in both attack and defense.

Madrid are still a work in progress. A defensive slip right before half-time let Roberto Piccoli run in behind and smash past Andriy Lunin to pull one back for 2-1.

The break didn’t help. With no changes made, Real Madrid came out flat and started giving up chances as fatigue set in.

In that spell, Moise Kean struck to level it at 2-2 in the 58th minute, just two minutes after coming off the bench.

The game slowed down in the closing stages. Both sides made a raft of subs and the 2-2 scoreline held until the final whistle.
