Angels acquire Blue Jays' no. 2 prospect in Jose Soriano trade...

The Los Angeles Angels have sent starting pitcher Jose Soriano to the Toronto Blue Jays. In return, Toronto dealt a package of prospects: shortstop Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti, and right-hander Angel Rivero.

The 27-year-old Soriano was scratched from his scheduled Saturday start. The Angels said they were taking a “prudent approach” with Monday’s trade deadline approaching.

The deal comes less than 24 hours after the Blue Jays traded fan-favorite starter Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. Details here.

The Dominican right-hander is putting together a strong year. Through 22 starts he has a career-best 3.29 ERA, allowing 97 hits with 127 strikeouts across 123 innings. He also leads MLB with 57 walks.

Soriano debuted in the majors in 2023 as a reliever with the Angels, but has since settled in as a starter and handled the transition well.

He posted a 3.42 ERA over 20 starts in 22 appearances in 2024, covering 113 innings. Last season he set career highs with 152 strikeouts in 169 innings, though his ERA climbed to a personal-worst 4.26.

Eddie Micheletti

The 24-year-old outfielder is batting .251/.347/.454 with 14 home runs and 45 RBI in 93 games at Double-A this year. He’s already matched his career-high in homers from last season, and did it in 13 fewer games.

Angel Rivero

The 19-year-old right-hander from Colombia has been pitching in rookie ball. Through 12 appearances with 9 starts, he owns a 2.36 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 42 innings.
