Real Madrid, former Super League founders, welcome FIFA dropping its World Cup investor plan weeks after agreeing a deal with UEFA.
FIFA drops controversial World Cup investment plan...
Real Madrid on Sunday backed FIFA’s decision to drop its disputed proposal to bring private investors into the World Cup.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino was forced to reverse course on Friday following heavy pushback from UEFA and several other confederations who opposed the plan.
Madrid were one of the founders of the failed European Super League. In February 2026 the club said it had struck a deal with UEFA “for the good of European club football,” ending years of tension between the two sides.
On Tuesday, FIFA revealed plans for a new commercial arm to oversee its flagship tournaments, including the World Cup and Club World Cup. The entity would be open to private investment, with Infantino claiming it could generate $4.2 billion.
UEFA spearheaded the backlash against FIFA’s proposal. The European body threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions and said it had lost faith in Infantino, who faced mounting pressure over the last few days.

“Our club believes this is good news for football, for its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans of our beloved sport,” said Los Blancos in a statement.
“Real Madrid wishes to express its gratitude to UEFA, to the confederations and federations, and to all the institutions that firmly and responsibly opposed this project.
“Their unity and sense of duty have protected football at a decisive moment.”
