KNVB Beker holders AZ dominated Eredivisie champions PSV in Sunday’s traditional curtain-raiser, running out 4-0 winners to lift a second Johan Cruyff Shield.
PSV boss Peter Bosz went bold with his team selection. Midfielder Noah Fernandez started at left-back, while Dutch-Moroccan winger Amir Bouhamdi made his pro debut on the left flank. Sven Mijnans also featured, facing his former club AZ the side he captained to KNVB Beker glory in 2025/26 for his first official PSV appearance.
AZ started with Jari De Busser between the posts. The Belgian keeper signed from Go Ahead Eagles this summer and won the preseason battle to start ahead of Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro. In front of him, Leeroy Echteld set up in a back five with Wouter Goes, Billy van Duijl and Lewis Schouten.
The Johan Cruyff Shield was over almost as soon as it began for PSV’s Joey Veerman. He was shown a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Mexx Meerdink. Referee Serdar Gozubuyuk was sent to the monitor by VAR Pol van Boekel and, after reviewing the studs-up tackle that caught Meerdink on the jaw, had no option but to send Veerman off.
It was Mexx Meerdink who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. He nodded in a deflected cross from Mexico international Mateo Chavez from point-blank range.
AZ stayed compact in their back five and let PSV have the ball. The Dutch champions couldn’t break through - Belgian keeper Jari De Busser only had to make two saves from close range to keep them out before the break.
Five minutes into the second half AZ hit on the break. After a quick passing move, Weslley Patati picked up the ball and curled a finish past Matej Kovar into the far corner to make it 2-0.
Elijah Dijkstra piled more misery on the Eredivisie champions. He finished off another rapid counter-attack to score his first goal for AZ.
Spanish defender Yarek Gasiorowski put the match to bed for AZ when he brought down Calvin Stengs inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot, and Ro-Zangelo Daal converted, firing low into Kovar’s left corner to make it 4-0 with more than 20 minutes left.

AZ had further openings but failed to add to the scoreline, which gave PSV a lifeline in the 80th minute. Ivan Perisic thought he had pulled one back after Gasiorowski scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
The 15-time Johan Cruyff Schaal winners PSV were completely outplayed as AZ claimed the trophy for only the second time in their history, adding to their 2013 triumph.
PSV begin their Eredivisie season on Saturday, August 8th with a trip to Fortuna Sittard at 20:00 CEST. AZ are also in action that evening, hosting newly-promoted ADO Den Haag at 21:00 CEST.
