Ajax have officially announced the signing of former Barcelona captain Marc-André ter Stegen on a season-long loan.

The 34-year-old had been linked with a move to Amsterdam since June. Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff made it clear he wanted an experienced goalkeeper, with ter Stegen and ex-Inter keeper Yann Sommer both on his list.

The move nearly stalled at the last minute over tax issues between Barcelona and ter Stegen. After weeks of talks, that was sorted, and ter Stegen got the go-ahead to leave Barça’s camp in Birmingham and head to Amsterdam.

Ter Stegen moved to FC Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014 and went on to make 423 appearances for the Catalan club. In that time the 34-year-old picked up 20 trophies, including 7 La Liga titles and the Champions League in 2015.

He arrives at Ajax after their worst Eredivisie campaign in years. The Amsterdam side finished 5th with 63 points, their joint-lowest total. Despite that, Ajax made it into the UEFA Conference League qualifiers through the domestic playoffs, and they reached the third qualifying round by beating Serbian club Vojvodina Novi Sad 8-2 on aggregate.

Ajax have drawn Irish side Shelbourne for the third qualifying round of the Conference League.

Ter Stegen becomes Ajax’s fifth summer signing. He joins Daley Blind, Caio Henrique, Marcos Leonardo, Tolu Arokodare, and fellow German Julian Brandt, who arrived on a free transfer last Friday.

The 34-year-old keeper still has a contract with Barcelona that runs until 2028.
