The southpaw becomes Boston’s second major pickup of the day. The Sox had earlier landed three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
Mayer, 22, is hitting .220/.282/.312 this season in his second year, with 3 home runs, 22 RBI and 3 stolen bases over 70 games. He steps in for Luis Arraez, who San Francisco dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies earlier.
