Liam Millar scored a late winner on the break as Hull City beat Coventry 1-0. The Tigers make it two wins from two in the Premier League.

Liam Millar popped up with a late winner to hand Hull City victory over Coventry City in a West Midlands clash of promoted sides. It also ended a run of three straight 0-0s between the two, and put the Tigers on two wins from two in the Premier League a sharp contrast to Coventry, who finished 22 points above them in the Championship last season.

Taiwo Awoniyi, a fresh face for Coventry, had already announced himself with an early strike in a midweek cup win over Plymouth. He was a threat again here, making a darting run and forcing a sharp block from Hull keeper Nobel Mendy inside the opening minutes.

The Nigerian striker then met a cross with a header that drifted just wide, though the linesman had already raised the flag for offside. 

Minutes later he got on the end of another chance and this time found the target, with no offside call to save Hull. He ought to have tested Konstantinos Tzolakis more, but the goalkeeper was untroubled.

Awoniyi wasn’t done before the break either. He worked Tzolakis again with a sharper effort, forcing a more convincing save. Still, the teams headed in all square at half-time.

Hull City looked nowhere near their attacking best in the opening 45, so Sergej Jakirovic rolled the dice at half-time. He brought on Lucas Gourna-Douath and Cody Drameh to try and change things.

The changes gave the Tigers more bite. Nobel Mendy even forced Carl Rushworth into his first real save with a fierce strike from distance.

Coventry City responded with changes of their own. Brandon Thomas-Asante added energy up front and won a corner, but Bobby Thomas fouled Tzolakis while trying to get on the end of it and the chance was wasted.

Then came the big moment for Hull. Substitute Liam Millar found space behind the Coventry defence and burst through, only to drag his shot just wide of the post.

Millar wasn’t about to miss twice. The Canadian made no mistake this time, keeping his composure to finish a rapid counter-attack straight from a Coventry corner and snatch all three points late on.

 

It’s still no points for Coventry in the Premier League this season. The loss also brings Frank Lampard’s strong record against Hull to an end, he’d gone unbeaten in 15 games as a player and boss before this (9 wins, 5 draws, 1 loss).

Against expectations, Hull have won their opening two and temporarily climb to second in the table.
