Tarkowski's 91st-minute goal earns Everton draw at Bournemouth

James Tarkowski scored in the 91st minute to rescue a point for Everton at Bournemouth. The draw keeps the Toffees unbeaten and denies Marco Rose a first win.

Tarkowski denies Bournemouth as Everton keep perfect start alive...

James Tarkowski struck in the 91st minute to earn Everton a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth, spoiling Marco Rose’s first game in charge of the Cherries.

  

Coming off back-to-back wins to start the season, Everton came out with plenty of attacking intent.

Everton will think they should have been ahead inside 10 minutes. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall swung in a corner and Jarrad Branthwaite glanced it toward goal, only for Dorde Petrovic to pull off a brilliant one-handed stop.

Bournemouth weren’t fazed by Everton’s fast start though, and created a chance of their own soon after. Rayan cut inside from the right and fired low from the edge of the six-yard box, but Jordan Pickford got down well to block it with his legs.

Petrovic was the star for Bournemouth in the opening exchanges, but he almost cost his side when he fumbled Tyrique George’s shot straight to Thierno Barry. The striker, who had four goals in his last two games, looked certain to score but Petrovic recovered quickly to stand firm and deny him.

  

That big save kept Bournemouth in it and gave them the chance to push on. They took it just before half-time, Evanilson held the ball up brilliantly before laying it off to Alex Scott, whose deflected strike found the bottom corner for the opener.

Barry should have made it 1-1 right before half-time. He broke clear on the counter and found the side netting instead of the goal. Three minutes into the second half he was presented with an even better opening after Bournemouth hesitated at the back, but he blazed his shot straight into Petrovic’s legs.

As the game wore on it started to feel like Everton had missed their moment. Rose’s Bournemouth sat in well and kept David Moyes’ side at arm’s length.

James Hill nearly doubled the lead for the hosts too, but he couldn’t force the ball over the line from a few yards out.

Bournemouth came even closer to a second when Rayan’s shot drew a superb one-handed save from Pickford, and the follow-up from Evanilson was then cleared off the line in dramatic fashion.

Those wasted chances came back to haunt them in stoppage time. A scramble from an Everton corner left the ball for Tarkowski, and he smashed home on the volley to keep the Toffees unbeaten this season.  

It’s a frustrating result for Rose, but Bournemouth do at least extend their unbeaten run at home to 10 matches.
