EPL: Hull 2-0 Man Utd – Tigers Stun United On Premier League Return

Michael Carrick admits Man Utd have “a lot to learn” after Shock defeat at Hull. Angry fans and frustrated Fernandes after Man Utd slump.

Man United lose 2-0 to Hull in Premier League opener...

United were torn apart by Hull at the MKM Stadium, with first-half strikes from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy sealing a stunning win for the Tigers.

United offered nothing up front and were all over the place defensively, a deadly mix that let newly-promoted Hull mark their Premier League return after nine years out with a win.

After finishing third last season, United had hoped to push Arsenal for the title. On this evidence, they are nowhere near the champions’ level.

Carrick admitted United were undone by poor defending, conceding twice from set-pieces and saying there is plenty to fix.

“We have a bit to improve on, it was never going to be perfect. Going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home,” he said.

“We can't give them much, and they had opportunities. We're disappointed, but it won't knock us.”

Carrick had urged his players not to underestimate Hull or next week’s opponents Ipswich, the second promoted side United face this season.

His warning proved spot on. But Carrick insisted United would come out stronger after the painful loss.

“It's for us to know and to improve during the week and keep getting stronger as a group. We have a lot to learn from it,” he said.

“Two goals is frustrating anyway. They decide the game today, and there's things to improve on.”

Carrick called on United’s board to bring in more players after what had been a quiet summer in the transfer market.

New midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both struggled on debut and were substituted by Carrick in the second half.

United have a deal in place to sign Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but Saturday’s limp performance showed they still need more reinforcements.

“One game doesn't change the direction of everything. It doesn't change the direction of the football club,” Carrick said.

Asked about Baleba's impending move, Carrick added: “I had all eyes on this today so any other player, until he's ours, it's not for me to comment on.”

United captain Bruno Fernandes, who broke the Premier League single-season assist record last year, couldn’t get into the game and looked visibly angry long before full-time.

Fernandes wasn’t the only one upset. United’s travelling supporters also made their anger clear.

“We understand the frustration, every season at the start we want to compete and win every game but we need the fans on our side, and to believe in ourselves,” Fernandes said.

“We know in the Premier League these types of away grounds are difficult to play against. You need to match their intensity and aggression. The two set pieces ended up costing us the game today.”
