Hull City made a dream return to the Premier League, beating a flat Manchester United 2-0. It was their first top-flight game since 2017, and their first league win over United since 1974.
On paper the teams were heading in opposite directions this season, so most expected United to cruise. Instead, Hull matched them from the start and looked every bit their equal.
Hull keeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had already kept out efforts from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha before Oli McBurnie’s powerful header drew a save from Senne Lammens at the other end.
Ryan Giles then curled an effort that Lammens tipped over, and from the corner McBurnie was denied again as the United keeper pushed the ball onto the post. Semi Ajayi was perfectly placed to slam home the rebound and spark wild celebrations for the Tigers’ dream start.
As United pushed for an equaliser, Patrick Dorgu had two good chances. Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire both set him up, but he failed to hit the target with either effort.
Mbeumo then tried an acrobatic shot that was turned behind by debutant Nobel Mendy. The new signing made an instant impact at the other end, calmly finishing Regan Slater’s perfect free-kick past Lammens.
John Egan then threw himself in front of a Fernandes shot to make sure Hull went in at half-time still 2-0 up and fully deserving of the lead.
Michael Carrick turned to Marcus Rashford, replacing Dorgu at the break, but United still couldn’t break down a stubborn Hull defence. Ayden Heaven’s header drifted well wide.
Hull grew in belief going forward too. McBurnie weaved through on a solo run and Belloumi let fly from distance, with his effort eventually clearing the bar.
Hull suffered setbacks when both Mendy and Lewie Coyle went off injured within seven minutes of each other, but the Tigers didn’t drop their intensity. Cody Drameh came on for Coyle and nearly made an instant impact.
Tzolakis was largely untroubled for most of the first half, but he was alert to palm Mbeumo’s shot wide when United did threaten.
As the game wound down, Maguire sent a speculative effort straight at Tzolakis. For Sergej Jakirović, it was the perfect start, he became the first Bosnian to manage in the Premier League and his Hull side sent a statement to the rest of the division.
The result and performance will raise plenty of questions for Carrick. United have now lost their opening PL game in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1973.
