An ownership group headed by India-born billionaire Vinod Khosla has bought the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, the team announced Saturday.

The Paul G. Allen Estate said it signed a formal sale agreement with a group led by the Khosla family. The group is headed by 71-year-old Sun Microsystems co-founder Vinod Khosla, who is also a partner in the San Francisco 49ers ownership group.

According to a Seahawks statement, the Khosla family will take over as the team’s controlling owner.

“We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks,” Vinod Khosla said in a statement. “We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere.”

NFL owners still need to approve the sale before the deal can be finalized.

The estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who passed away in 2018, has instructed trust executor Jody Allen, his sister, to donate all proceeds from the Seahawks sale to charity.

“Excited to be part of this great franchise,” Vinod Khosla posted on social media. “Also excited to see the money all go to a non-profit. No other comments till sale is final.”

Financial terms were not released, but ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that the sale price was $9.612 billion - a record for an NFL franchise.

The last NFL team sold was the Washington Commanders in 2023, in a deal worth $6.05 billion.

The Khosla family will have to divest its ownership stake in the rival 49ers before the sale can be finalized.

ESPN reported that the divestment is expected to happen in time for next month’s league meeting.
