On Sunday, Conor McGregor said his right knee felt fine before he hurt it on the opening kick of his MMA bout against Max Holloway, which ended a five-year break from fighting.
The Irish star lost in 69 seconds at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, but vowed to come back again once he recovers from this setback.
McGregor hurt himself at the start of the fight when he planted his right leg for a leaping roundhouse kick. He hit the mat three times before the bout was stopped.
“I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened,” McGregor wrote on X on Sunday after the fight.
“The talk of me being off while walking into the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock (at) what has taken place.”
McGregor hadn’t fought since breaking his left leg in a 2021 loss, and he insisted his famous career isn’t finished yet.
“I will overcome this,” he wrote. “I will not be deterred. I will return.”
McGregor described the injury as “my head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” which many took as a reference to torn knee ligaments.

“I had no injury/injuries going into the fight,” McGregor posted.
“I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere.”
McGregor described his situation as, “I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”

A victorious Holloway joked that he made McGregor “weak in the knees” and said he wants a rematch with McGregor whenever he can. Holloway lost to McGregor in their first fight back in 2013.
“Thank you Conor for fight. Took a lot to make that walk after these past few years,” Holloway posted on X. “Sending prayers for a speedy recovery.”
