Claude Giroux is heading back to Ottawa. The Senators signed the veteran forward to a one-year contract on Tuesday for what will be his 20th NHL season.

The deal is worth $5 million. It includes a $2 million base salary plus $3 million in potential performance bonuses.

At 38, Giroux will become just the eighth active NHL player to hit 20 seasons. He joins Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, Brent Burns, Corey Perry, Ryan Suter, Kris Letang, and Evgeni Malkin in that group.

The Ontario native is closing in on a big milestone - he needs 21 goals and 14 assists to become only the 16th player in NHL history with 400 goals and 800 assists.

Giroux has spent the last four seasons in Ottawa. He’s coming off a year where he matched a career-low with 14 goals, but still posted 35 assists for the second straight season.

Durability has been Giroux’s calling card in Ottawa - he’s missed just one regular-season game with the Senators. He also set a personal best with 35 goals in his first year with the club.

Now the veteran forward’s goal is simple: wrap up his career at home.

Giroux spent the first 14.5 seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Flyers, who drafted him 22nd overall in 2006. By 2010 he was leading them to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

The Flyers dealt Giroux to the Florida Panthers during the 2021-22 season. He then signed with Ottawa as a free agent in the summer of 2022.
