Tuchel urges fans to stay positive after England 0-0 Ghana draw...
Thomas Tuchel praised Ghana’s defence after England were held to a 0-0 World Cup draw on Tuesday. The England boss said his side were stifled by one of the toughest backlines he’s faced, and called on fans to stay positive.
“Full respect to Ghana,” the German told reporters. “They defended with real determination and discipline. Physically, it was one of the most aggressive, well-organized defensive displays I’ve seen.”
Tuchel understood why supporters were disappointed. After England’s free-flowing 4-2 win over Croatia in their opener, they couldn’t break down Ghana’s defence or recreate that attacking rhythm.
England dominated the ball with 78.8% possession against Ghana. It’s the highest share of possession ever recorded for a team that failed to score in a World Cup match since records began in 1966.
Tuchel said Harry Kane probably won’t get a better chance than the one he sent over the bar in the 86th minute. Nico O’Reilly had just hit the crossbar with a header, and the rebound dropped perfectly for the England captain.
“Ninety-nine times out of 100 he puts that away,” Tuchel said.
With four points from two games, England are all but through to the knockout stage. They wrap up Group L against Panama on Saturday.
