Kone Injury Stuns Canada as They Crush Qatar to Close In on Last 32
Kone injury mars Canada’s historic win over Qatar

Canada cruised to a 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver but Ismael Kone’s injury cast a shadow. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick as Canada neared a round of 32 spot.

Kone injury overshadows Canada’s 6-0 rout of Qatar in ‘battle of Vancouver...’

Stephen Eustaquio was the first to signal for help. It should’ve been a celebration for the Canada captain as his side cruised to a 6-0 win over Qatar, but the sight of Ismael Koné in agony on the turf will define this “Battle of Vancouver.”

Eustaquio sprinted to get the medical team on the pitch as fast as possible to treat Kone. Canada’s players were clearly shaken, and so was Assim Madibo. The Qatar midfielder got sent off for the tackle, which looked fairly harmless at first glance but came in late.

Kone’s teammates gathered around as he was loaded onto a stretcher. Some consoled one another while others got into tense exchanges with Qatar’s players. It took several minutes before Koné was carried off. Thankfully he was upright, waving to the crowd chanting his name and pointing out family members to show he was okay.

With oxygen and painkillers, he received hugs from both coaches. Qatar’s bench also lined up to shake his hand as he was taken away.

The team’s unity showed up minutes later when Nathan Saliba came on for Koné and curled in a brilliant free kick. He grabbed a Canada jersey from the bench - No. 8 on the back, Koné’s number - and held it up in tribute.

Jesse Marsch also brought the whole squad together at the next hydration break. It felt symbolic, like they were rallying around each other after the scare.

Canada’s fans will remember the history, but it was a nightmare day for Qatar. They went down to 10 early when Homam Al Amin was correctly sent off for stopping a clear goal-scoring chance, and they never recovered. They looked porous at the back even with everyone behind the ball, and Madibo’s reckless challenge only made a bad situation worse.

It was a sloppy, ill-disciplined performance from the 2022 hosts, and it might have ended their tournament. They collapsed under the Vancouver lights in a showing that offered nothing to be proud of.

For Canada, a spot in the round of 32 looks all but sealed. Their focus now turns to Switzerland. Avoid defeat there and they’ll top Group B - a result that would win them even more fans in a country where soccer still plays second fiddle.

On top of that, Jonathan David and Cyle Larin looked lethal up front when it was still a contest. That classic “big man, little man” pairing from the 2000s clicked again. They combined for four of Canada’s goals, with David capping it off with a stoppage-time strike for his third hat-trick for the national team.

His subdued celebration summed up the day. History made, but overshadowed by despair. Now Marsch’s job is to regroup the team and get them ready for what’s next.
