Netherlands defender Denzel Dumfries said Monday he’s expecting Tunisia to come out fighting in their final Group F game. Even with two heavy defeats and a mid-tournament coaching switch, he thinks the North African side will still bring plenty of energy.
Tunisia are out after losing 5-1 to Sweden and 4-0 to Japan. They sacked Sabri Lamouchi after the opener, then rushed Hervé Renard in before the Japan match.
The Dutch smashed Sweden 5-1 after drawing 2-2 with Japan. Now they’re battling to finish top of the group.
“We know that they changed the coach after the first match. But for everyone, it's an honour to play in the World Cup. So what I expect is that they will play full,” Dumfries told reporters ahead of Thursday's match in Kansas City.
“Every game in the World Cup is a tough game. Everyone plays with honour, proud to represent their country. I expect that they will come with full energy, and we have to show it as well,” the Inter Milan player added.
Renard and Dumfries both stress focus
Dumfries echoed what Renard said after the Japan game, when the French coach insisted Tunisia needed to stay locked in.
“Even if we are eliminated we still have a third game to play. We are in a World Cup,” Renard stressed.
Dutch confidence boosted by Sweden win
Dumfries said the Netherlands are riding high after thumping Sweden, pointing to the squad’s attacking options. The 30-year-old also had a hand in it himself, delivering two assists to set up Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo.
“We know we have a squad with a lot of quality in front, a lot of players with the capability of scoring,” Dumfries said. “It's a good sign and it gives confidence.”
