The Danish player is now one win closer to another Wimbledon run. Holmgren stunned the field last year by reaching the third round from qualifying, and he started his 2026 campaign by advancing through the first round of qualifying on Monday.

World No. 141 August Holmgren overcame a few hurdles to defeat No. 210 Liam Broady 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Holmgren’s serve powered his Wimbledon run last year, but it misfired early Monday. He fired six double faults in just the first two games and faced three break points, yet he still held to level it at 2-2.

He ended the match with 16 aces but also 18 double faults. Holmgren had a break point at 3-3 and faced one at 5-6, but neither player could break. The set went to a tiebreak.

Holmgren’s backhand found its rhythm from the first point and that put him up 3-0. Broady hit back to level at 5-5, but Holmgren took control in the tiebreak and closed it 8-6.

Broady grabbed the momentum in set two, breaking for 3-2 and then holding firm to take it 6-4. In the third, Holmgren faced break points a few times but kept fighting his way out of trouble each time.

He was on the brink at 4-4 when the 28-year-old Dane dropped to 0-40 on serve. An exit looked imminent, but Holmgren pulled out a few huge serves and battled his way out of trouble.

Holmgren had only created one break point all match, but at 6-5 in the third he suddenly found himself 40-0 up on Broady’s serve.

Holmgren then cracked a backhand down the line to finally get the break and breathe a sigh of relief. The win keeps his dream of another big Wimbledon run alive.

Next up for Holmgren is Swiss player Jerome Kym, world No. 197, in the second round of qualifying.
