Steven Gerrard: Slot Did 'Incredible Job' At Liverpool But Exit Was Expected
Liverpool legend Gerrard reacted to Arne Slot’s exit, calling his first season ‘incredible’ but admitting replacing Klopp made the job ‘tough.’
Steven Gerrard says he’s ‘gutted’ but ‘not surprised’ Liverpool sacked Arne Slot after 5th place finish, just one year after winning the Premier League...
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard said he’s “gutted” by Arne Slot’s dismissal, but admitted he saw it coming.
Slot, 47, was let go after Liverpool finished 5th in the Premier League. That comes just a year after he won the title in his debut season.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is now the leading candidate to replace Arne Slot at Anfield, with his contract at the Vitality Stadium due to expire next month.
Gerrard was speaking from the Champions League final in Budapest for TNT Sports when he gave his take.
“Not surprised. Gutted for Arne Slot because in his first year, he had done an incredible job. Taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp, that was a tough task and big shoes to fill, and he had done it seamlessly,” he said.
“It's very difficult to win the Premier League, and I know that more than most. For him to deliver that in year one cannot be forgotten, so I think he will go down in the history books and be remembered forever.
“Having said that, in the last 10 games of last season and the majority of this season, we have not looked like Liverpool. The style... it has been difficult to watch at times. It looks disjointed, broken.
“When I got the news, of course, your initial reaction is surprise and shock. But when you analyse it properly, it's probably the right time in my opinion.”
Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way.
