World Cup Warning: Bafana Bafana’s Group A Opponents Hit Form Before SA Opener

Bafana Bafana’s first World Cup opponents are hitting form in warm-ups, with Mexico among those posting wins including a five-goal thrashing.
Mexico faced Australia on Saturday and controlled the game, but only managed a 1-0 win. They wasted chances and were lucky not to be punished.
The match drew 78,479 fans to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Mexico dominated possession and got their goal from a Johan Vásquez header off a set piece.
Australia created the clearer chances though, and should have found the net at least once.
The 1-0 result came after Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ghana last week. Coach Javier Aguirre will name his final World Cup squad on Sunday.
Mexico still have one more warm-up, facing Serbia on Friday SA time. Then they open the World Cup against Bafana Bafana in Mexico City on June 11. South Africa coach Hugo Broos will have watched closely with interest.
Bafana’s other Group A opponent, the Czech Republic, play Kosovo on Sunday in their first warm-up. They haven’t featured since beating Denmark on penalties in March to book their World Cup spot.
The Czechs have one more friendly set for Friday SA time against Guatemala in New Jersey. Their Group A campaign starts against South Korea on June 12 SA time.
South Korea made a statement on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in their friendly.
Son Heung-min netted twice before half-time, with Cho Gue-sung adding a brace and Hwang Hee-chan getting the fifth.
Korea were completely dominant, firing 19 shots with 11 on target and five big chances. Trinidad & Tobago managed just one shot on target.
South Korea have one last friendly left against El Salvador on Thursday SA time before kicking off their World Cup campaign.
Bafana Bafana are also set for a final warm-up, facing Jamaica on Friday. Venue and kick-off time are still TBC.
Jamaica beat India 2-0 earlier this week, then fell 3-0 to Nigeria in their other friendly.
