Lamine Yamal headlines Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad announced by coach Luis de la Fuente on Monday. Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino also makes the cut after returning from injury.

This will be the first World Cup without a Real Madrid player in Spain’s squad. Dean Huijsen was left out, and veteran Dani Carvajal also missed selection following an injury-hit season.

Merino came off the bench for Arsenal against Crystal Palace on Sunday in their final Premier League game. It marked his first appearance since January, when he suffered a foot fracture.

De la Fuente also named defenders Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill after strong seasons with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. As a result, Dean Huijsen and Atletico’s Robin Le Normand were left out.

Alongside 18-year-old Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, Athletic Club’s Nico Williams was key to Spain’s Euro 2024 win. Williams is in the squad despite a season heavily affected by fitness problems.

Yamal is doubtful for Spain’s opening matches after picking up a hamstring injury with Barcelona. He has been sidelined since late April.
