Southampton Spying Charge: EFL Refers Case to Independent Commission
Southampton face EFL charge over alleged spying incident

The EFL charged Southampton on Friday after Middlesbrough complained about alleged spying ahead of their Championship play-off semi-final first leg.

Southampton face an EFL charge for allegedly observing Middlesbrough’s training within 72 hours of their Championship promotion play-off semi-final...

The two clubs meet at Middlesbrough’s ground on Saturday, with the return leg scheduled for St Mary’s on Tuesday.

“Southampton Football Club ‌has today been charged with a breach of EFL Regulations, and the matter will be referred to ‌an Independent Disciplinary Commission,” the EFL said ‌in a statement.

“This follows a request from the EFL for the club’s observations after a complaint from Middlesbrough relating to alleged unauthorised filming on private property ahead of the two clubs meeting (on Saturday).”

The EFL cited rules that prohibit clubs from watching, or attempting to watch, another team’s training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match between them.

Ordinarily Southampton would have 14 days to reply, but the League said it will ask the Independent Disciplinary Commission to schedule a hearing as quickly as possible.

Neither club had commented publicly at the time.

Hull City and Millwall drew 0-0 in the other semi-final first leg on Friday. Their second leg takes place in London on Monday.

Millwall ended the season in third, with Southampton fourth, Middlesbrough fifth and Hull sixth.

Coventry City and Ipswich Town finished as champions and runners-up respectively, securing automatic promotion to the Premier League.
