Magic dismiss Jamahl Mosley after third straight first-round exit

Jamahl Mosley was dismissed as Magic head coach after Orlando’s first-round playoff exit to the top-seeded Pistons, marking the team’s seventh first-round departure since 2010 and ending his five-year tenure.

Orlando parts ways with Jamahl Mosley after the Magic blew a 3-1 series lead to Detroit and failed to advance past the first round for the third consecutive year...

The Orlando Magic parted ways with head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday, only hours after a heavy playoff loss in Detroit ended their season.

The top-seeded Pistons overturned a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Magic 116-94 in Game 7 on Sunday and advance in the Eastern Conference first round.

Before the team had even settled back in Florida, Jeff Weltman, the Magic’s president of basketball operations, announced Mosley’s firing.

“We're grateful to Jamahl for all he has done for the Orlando Magic,” Weltman said. “We appreciate his leadership and the positive contributions he made as head coach.

“While this was a difficult decision, we feel it's time for a new voice and fresh perspective.”

The Pistons became just the 15th team in NBA history to win a series after being down 3-1, and later on Monday they announced a contract extension for coach J.B. Bickerstaff, though no terms were disclosed.

Before joining Orlando in July 2021, 47-year-old Mosley worked as an assistant with Denver, Cleveland and Dallas.

His five-year stint was the longest for a Magic head coach since Stan Van Gundy, who took Orlando to the 2009 NBA Finals where they were beaten by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Orlando hasn’t won a playoff series since 2010, exiting in the first round seven times and missing the postseason entirely on nine occasions in that span.

During Mosley’s tenure the Magic posted a 189-221 record, including a 45-37 mark this season, and reached the playoffs for three straight years before bowing out early each time.
