New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced that his office secured 1,000 tickets for city residents at $50 each for the upcoming World Cup, which starts on June 11.
Mamdani, who has been in office since January, reached the deal after talks with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and a FaceTime call with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, according to The Athletic.
The 1,000 tickets cover five group stage matches and two knockout games, but do not include the final on July 19.
In a video posted to X, Mamdani said: “Last year, we said we would fight for cheaper tickets for New Yorkers, and today, just like Arsenal - we got it done.”
The ballot for local residents opens on May 25, and winners will be notified on June 3.
At a press conference to announce the deal, USMNT star Timothy Weah said: “I think the mayor has done an amazing job to make these tickets available to New Yorkers, and my job is to bring joy, to put smiles on faces, and I'm going to do exactly that.”
