The Most Valuable Player award stands as the highest individual honor in basketball. Each year the league’s standout performer takes home what is now called the Michael Jordan Trophy. So who has claimed the most MVP awards? We have the full breakdown.
Where It All Began
The NBA first handed out the MVP award in the 1955–56 season. It was created to honor the league’s top player that year, and the tradition has continued uninterrupted ever since.
A total of 36 players have won the MVP award at least once, from the inaugural winner Bob Pettit to the most recent recipient, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the record with six MVP titles, more than any other player.
American players dominated the award for decades, but every MVP since 2019 has come from outside the US. Steph Curry remains the only player ever to win the award unanimously, achieving it during the Warriors’ historic 2015–16 season. Shaquille O’Neal in 2000 and LeBron James in 2013 came close to matching that feat, missing out by a single vote each.
From the award’s start through 1980, NBA players voted for the MVP themselves. Since then, the selection has been made by journalists and basketball experts from around the world, though most are still based in the US. The change has fueled ongoing debate over an award widely regarded as the most prestigious individual honor in basketball.
