Salah’s subtle dig at Slot after ‘painful’ Liverpool defeat

Salah returned from injury but couldn’t prevent defeat as Brighton and Bournemouth wins could drop Liverpool to seventh.

Pressure grows on Arne Slot after Liverpool’s latest loss, with Salah publicly calling for a change in style...

Mohamed Salah appeared to take a veiled swipe at manager Arne Slot in a pointed message to Liverpool fans following another tough defeat.

Salah’s nine-year spell at Anfield looks set to end on a low note.

Liverpool fell 4-2 to Aston Villa on Friday night, and the pressure on Arne Slot keeps building.

It was a grim evening for the Reds with few bright spots, though Salah’s return from a two-game injury layoff stood out.

The Egyptian came on for the last 16 minutes at Villa Park, replacing a quiet Cody Gakpo, but couldn’t change the outcome.

Salah made it clear he doesn’t want the season to fizzle out. After the “painful” loss, he posted a message urging Liverpool to bring back the aggressive, high-energy style they played under Jurgen Klopp.

“I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that,” Salah said.

“Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies.

“That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.

“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.

“As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

Under Slot, Liverpool have now let in 52 goals in a 38-game Premier League season, the most they’ve conceded in that format. If results go against them, they risk missing out on Champions League qualification.

If Brighton and Bournemouth both win their last two games and Liverpool lose to Brentford, the Reds would drop to seventh in the table.
