Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has agreed a four-year contract extension that keeps him in charge until 2032, the Irish FA announced on Wednesday.
The 56-year-old is in his second stint with the team after returning in 2022, having stepped down in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has now overseen a record 104 matches for Northern Ireland.
“This is a role that means a great deal to me,” he said.
“I continue to believe strongly in the potential of this group of players and the direction we are moving in. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am excited by the future.”
O’Neill first took charge of Northern Ireland in 2011 and led them to Euro 2016, ending a 30-year wait for a major tournament. The team reached the last 16 before being knocked out.
O’Neill was named interim Blackburn Rovers manager in February and juggled that role with his Northern Ireland duties. Earlier this month, it was confirmed he would not take the Blackburn job permanently.
Northern Ireland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1986 ended in March after a 2-0 loss to Italy in the UEFA play-off semi-final.
Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood praised O’Neill’s impact, saying his contribution to the team has been significant.
“I am delighted that he will continue that work into the future and I look forward to more memorable achievements for the team,” he said.
