McFarlane said Chelsea’s performance vs City showed players remain committed despite reports of dressing room unrest this season.

Chelsea’s interim manager Calum McFarlane has called on his team to recover quickly from their FA Cup final loss to Manchester City ahead of Tuesday’s “massive” derby with Tottenham.

The Blues fell 1-0 at Wembley on Saturday after Antoine Semenyo scored with a clever back-flick in the second half.

Chelsea haven’t won a domestic trophy since 2018 and now risk missing out on European football altogether next season.

Without a win in seven Premier League games, McFarlane’s side sit ninth. They host a struggling Tottenham next week in what looks like their final shot at turning a tough season around.

Even if Chelsea beat their London rivals, it might not be enough to keep their Europa League hopes alive, with qualification depending on results elsewhere.

Asked what it would mean for Chelsea to fail to qualify for Europe, both financially and in sporting terms, McFarlane said: “You're asking an interim coach what the implications of the club are going to be. I'm not privy to that information.

“My job is to prepare the team for games and training, which I'll be doing on Tuesday for Spurs, which is a massive game for this club.”

Despite months of reports about dressing room unrest, McFarlane said Chelsea’s committed performance against City proved the players are still fully behind the team.

“It's a really talented group. Lots of quality in that group,” he said.

“The fight and heart has been questioned at times, but the last two performances, I don't think you can question that.

“I think they gave everything today to try and win that trophy for the club.“

Chelsea have now lost four FA Cup finals in a row, a record for the club, since last lifting the trophy against Manchester United in 2018.

It’s been another frustrating season for the west London side, with fans protesting against owners BlueCo outside Wembley before kick-off.

McFarlane is serving his second stint as interim manager this season. He stepped in after Enzo Maresca left following 18 months in charge, and after Liam Rosenior was dismissed just 106 days into the job.

Despite his limited senior experience, the former U21 coach set up Chelsea in a way that gave Pep Guardiola’s City problems, until Semenyo finally broke through to score the winner.

“Evenly matched game, both teams had moments of control and momentum. I felt we went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the world,” McFarlane said.

"We didn't have that momentum of quality to get in front. We know what this team is capable of. We haven't shown that enough this season.”
