Mateus Fernandes looks set to leave West Ham this summer, with interest expected whether the club stays up or goes down.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have two games left to make up a two-point gap to Tottenham and escape the relegation zone.
West Ham face Newcastle away on Sunday before hosting Leeds on the final day. If they lose at St James’ Park and Spurs beat Chelsea, their relegation could be confirmed as early as Tuesday.
A drop to the Championship would likely trigger a clear-out at the London Stadium, and Fernandes is one of the players they’re willing to let go.
According to The Athletic, West Ham are already “preparing for life” without the Portuguese midfielder. They plan to sell him to help fund summer signings, regardless of which division they’re in.
Champions League finalists PSG are said to be tracking Fernandes, while Manchester United are also keen as they start rebuilding their midfield.
The 21-year-old has been a standout since arriving from Southampton last summer. He’s stepped up after Lucas Paquetá’s departure, contributing nine goals and assists in 40 appearances this season.
Fernandes is already rated as one of the Premier League’s top young midfielders. A strong showing for Portugal at the World Cup would only push his reputation and price tag higher.
