End of an Era: Robertson Set to Exit Liverpool This Summer
Robertson’s contract expires in June. Arne Slot credits the Scotland captain for revolutionising the full-back position alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.
From an £8m signing to a Liverpool legend, Robertson leaves Anfield with 8 major trophies. Slot calls him a 'great human' who transformed the full-back role...
Arne Slot says Liverpool pulled off one of football’s best deals when they signed Andy Robertson from Hull City for £8 million in 2017.
Most fans didn’t know much about him at the time. But Robertson quickly won them over with his endless energy down the left and a delivery that consistently created chances.
For years, Scotland captain Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were regarded as two of the Premier League’s best full-backs. Many credit them with changing the position through their attacking impact.
Alexander-Arnold holds the record for most assists by a full-back in the competition’s history. Robertson sits second, with double-digit assists in three different seasons.
Now 32, Robertson was central to Liverpool’s success under Jürgen Klopp and has quickly earned the same status with Arne Slot.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s trip to Aston Villa, Slot praised how Robertson redefined the full-back role with his relentless up-and-down work on the flank. He even pointed to that well-known clip against Manchester City as the perfect example.
“I think he is maybe the player who changed that position into a player that constantly goes up and down. I think we all remember the press vs Man City; many, many managers showed that to their players. I was one of them,” the Dutchman said.
“It showed mentality and intensity. He played with that all throughout, constantly up and down, important on both sides of the pitch. One of the full-backs that changed that position.
“He is a great human, I have experienced that for two years working with him. People see that in social media posts. He has been a very influential player for this club.”
