The Italian said he felt tired but raised his level when it mattered, beating Fils to reach the Madrid Open final on Friday.

Sinner wrapped up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fils, breaking late in the second set to keep his unbeaten run going in Madrid...

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the Madrid Open final.

The Italian extended his winning streak to 22 matches with the victory. On Sunday he will play for a record fifth straight Masters 1000 title.

With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined by injury, Jannik Sinner enters the Madrid final as the clear favorite at the Caja Magica. A win would extend his recent run of titles at Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte Carlo.

The 24-year-old Italian will meet either second seed Alexander Zverev or Belgium’s rising player Alexander Blockx in Sunday’s final.

“I played at a very high level, but I focus on always raising my level a little. Especially when the tournament gets serious... You have to raise your level if you want to keep going,” Sinner told Movistar.

The Italian noted he was a little drained from the nonstop matches.

“Obviously, there's a bit of fatigue - mentally I feel good, but there is some physical tiredness, my body isn't completely fresh, but that's normal, and I think it's a very positive thing for me, because it means I'm playing a lot of matches,” Sinner said.

“Of course, on Sunday we'll try to do even better, but whatever happens, I've reached another final in a very important tournament.”

Right now, taking down Sinner looks almost impossible. The four-time Grand Slam champion came out firing against Barcelona Open winner Arthur Fils, who’s looked sharp since coming back from injury in February.

Sinner struck first, breaking Fils in the third game after the Frenchman sent a ball long to go down 2-1.

He broke again in the fifth game as world No. 25 Fils had no answer for Sinner’s power.

Fils hasn’t made a Masters 1000 final yet, and with Sinner playing at that level, it was clear he’d have to wait a bit longer for that chance.

Sinner closed out the first set on serve, holding off a late push from Fils that stopped a third break.

The second set was much tighter, with Fils growing in confidence and belief as it went on.
