Lyon survive five-goal thriller to beat relegation-threatened Auxerre in Ligue 1.
Lyon made it three straight Ligue 1 wins as a Roman Yaremchuk brace powered Les Gones to a 3-2 victory over Auxerre at the Groupama Stadium.
Lyon’s recent form had been erratic heading into this spring clash. A 13-game winning streak was followed by a nine-game winless drought.
Lyon secured a third straight Ligue 1 win as Roman Yaremchuk’s brace led Les Gones to a 3-2 victory over Auxerre at the Groupama Stadium.
Lyon’s form leading into this spring fixture had been strange. They followed a 13-game winning streak with a nine-game winless run.
Les Gones entered this afternoon’s match on back-to-back wins, including a 2-1 victory at Paris Saint-Germain last weekend. Paulo Fonseca’s side started quickly when Afonso Moreira picked up the ball on the right side of the box. His cross to Yaremchuk slid just wide as the Ukrainian couldn’t reach it.
Yaremchuk didn’t have to wait long to celebrate. In the 19th minute, Abner Vinicius delivered a cross from the left and the striker was there to steer it home for his second league goal since his January loan arrival.
Lyon took a hit after the half-hour mark when Orel Mangala was forced off injured.
Adding insult to injury, Auxerre equalised in fortunate fashion just a minute later. A long free-kick floated into the box was headed back across goal.
Lyon failed to clear the danger. After a scramble in the box, former Lyon man Sinaly Diomande forced the ball in to quiet most of the stadium.
Lyon controlled play after the restart and nearly regained the lead early in the second half, but Endrick’s close-range effort was brilliantly stopped by Theo De Percin.
The Auxerre keeper had no chance just past the hour mark. Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso swept home in the 66th minute from Ainsley Maitland-Niles’s cutback.

Fonseca’s side smelled blood and doubled their lead five minutes later. Tolisso turned provider, delivering an early cross into the box that Yaremchuk poked home.
Down two, Christophe Pelissier responded with a triple substitution. Auxerre pulled one back with two minutes left in regulation when Bryan Okoh fired a stunning low drive from outside the box past Dominik Greif.
The goal came too late, though. Lyon held on to take all three points and strengthen their spot in Ligue 1’s top three. Auxerre stay in the relegation play-off place, four points from safety with three games left.
