Jannik Sinner Opens French Open Campaign With Straight-Sets Win
| Clinical Jannik Sinner powers into Roland Garros second round |
The 24-year-old dropped just 8 games against Tabur. Sinner arrives in Paris off three straight clay Masters titles and a 30-match win streak.
Sinner needed just over two hours to beat wildcard Tabur. With Alcaraz out, the 24-year-old looks the man to beat on clay in Paris...
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner delivered a composed and efficient performance in his French Open opener on Tuesday. He defeated French wildcard Clement Tabur to advance to the second round.
The 24-year-old closed out the match 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in just over two hours.
This was Sinner’s 30th win in a row, and it sent a clear message to his rivals. The Italian is locked in and aiming to extend the streak as he chases the final piece of the career Grand Slam.
Sinner swept all three clay-court Masters 1000 titles ahead of Roland Garros. His form suggests he has figured out how to win consistently on the red dirt.
With two-time defending champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz absent from the draw, Sinner looks like the favorite to claim the Coupe des Mousquetaires for the first time when the men’s final takes place on June 7th.
“I'm very happy to be back here, it's a very very special place,” Sinner said.
“First-round matches they are never easier but (it's) even more special to start the tournament in a night session.”
Sinner last played on Court Philippe Chatrier in last year’s French Open final. If he felt any nerves returning to the scene of that five-set defeat, where he missed three championship points, it did not show.
The player from San Candido started fast on centre court. He took the first set 6-1 in just 30 minutes.
World No. 171 Tabur stayed committed and earned the crowd’s support. But Sinner’s groundstrokes were too heavy and precise, and he moved ahead with a two-set lead.

Sinner had to work hard to hold his first service game of the third set. He then broke immediately and stayed on track to close out the win.

Sinner missed his first match point with an uncharacteristic volley error. He let two more slip before closing it out on his own serve in the following game.
He will face Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round.
