Italian Open: Sinner Chasing Sixth Straight Masters 1000 vs Medvedev
| Sinner leads Medvedev 4-2 in decider at Italian Open semi |
Jannik Sinner is two games from the final and a sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title after taking control before play was halted.
Casper Ruud advanced to the Italian Open final with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Luciano Darderi and will face the winner of Sinner vs Medvedev...
Heavy rain halted Jannik Sinner’s Italian Open semi-final against Daniil Medvedev on Friday with the world No. 1 just two games from the final. Sinner led 6-2, 5-7, 4-2 when play was stopped.
The home favorite looked dominant on clay early on, taking the first set in just over 30 minutes and dropping only two points on serve.
Medvedev fought back in the second to force a decider, as Sinner began to look uncomfortable and appeared to be struggling physically.
Medvedev became the first player in the tournament to take a set off the top seed.
Sinner answered right back in the third, grabbing an early break that fired up the Campo Centrale crowd and put him back in control.
He did that despite calling for a medical timeout after showing signs of cramping - a stoppage that frustrated Medvedev, who questioned how serious the issue really was.

Play was stopped as heavy rain fell in Rome, and organizers later confirmed the match would pick back up on Saturday.
Sinner is chasing a sixth straight Masters 1000 title and the only one he hasn’t won yet. The run includes recent wins in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
Whoever advances will meet Casper Ruud in the final after the Norwegian swept past Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1.
Ruud reached his first Rome final by taking down a worn-out Darderi, who had come through a marathon quarter-final in the early hours of Thursday.
