Flyers’ Early Burst Stuns Carolina
Philadelphia came out flying right after puck drop, scoring twice in 39 seconds on just three shots.
Jamie Drysdale opened it with his second playoff goal on the team’s first power play of the night, a notable conversion given Philly had gone 2-for-21 on the man advantage entering the game.
The pair of goals marked the first time Carolina had trailed since April 7, and the lead grew 39 seconds later when Sean Couturier scored his first playoff goal off Carl Grundstrom’s assist to make it 2-0.
The 39 seconds between the Flyers’ two goals is the second-fastest span between separate goals for the franchise in the last 15 years. Their fastest came in Game 1 of the 2012 Eastern Conference semi-finals against New Jersey, when they scored 37 seconds apart.
Carolina answered in a similar way, scoring on its first power play of the game. Both teams had gone 0-for-8 with the man advantage in Game 1, but started Game 2 a perfect 2-for-2.
Nikolaj Ehlers cut the deficit to 2-1 with his first goal of the playoffs, assisted by Jackson Blake’s fifth and K’Andre Miller’s fourth.

Philadelphia was called for too many men on the ice, giving Carolina 1:05 remaining on its third power play of the game that carried over into the second period.
Carolina outshot Philadelphia 10-6 in the first period, while the Flyers had the edge physically with a 17-11 advantage in hits and five blocked shots to Carolina’s two.
After the Hurricanes came up empty on the rollover power play, Philadelphia went on one of its own. That was cut short when Rasmus Ristolainen was called for tripping, creating a brief 4-on-4 for under 20 seconds before Carolina returned to the power play with 1:40 left. It was the seventh power play between both teams in the opening 25 minutes.
Travis Sanheim made what turned out to be the save of the game, getting his stick on the puck just before it crossed the line under Vladar’s pads.

Philadelphia followed with another power play of its own, making it three straight without registering a shot on goal. The Flyers’ only goal still stood as the one they scored in the first period.
After Carolina’s power play came up empty with four minutes left in the second, Andrei Svechnikov was called for high-sticking, pushing the total to 10 power plays before the period ended. Both teams remained a combined 0-for-8 heading into the third.
Vladar stopped 16 shots in the second period, matching his career high set earlier this season against Boston. That run ended when Carolina tied it with under nine minutes to play, as Seth Jarvis scored his first goal of the playoffs to make it 2-2.
Jarvis hadn’t scored since April 4th, and the goal was his 20th in the playoffs, placing him third on the franchise’s all-time list behind Sebastian Aho’s 37 and Svechnikov’s 23.
The teams played a full two minutes of 4-on-4 but couldn’t capitalize on the open ice, sending the game to overtime where Carolina secured the Game 2 win.
After both clubs converted on their first power play chances, they combined to go 0-for-11 on the man advantage for the rest of the game.
