Jesper De Jong beats Cina in straight sets to reach French Open third round...

Jesper de Jong advanced to the third round of the French Open with a straightforward win over Italian Federico Cina. He won 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in just under two hours.

De Jong is now the last Dutch player left in the men’s draw after entering as a lucky loser. In the first round he knocked out Stan Wawrinka in what was Wawrinka’s final Roland-Garros appearance. Ranked 106th, De Jong met 19-year-old Cina in round two. The Italian had beaten Reilly Opelka in five sets on Sunday.

De Jong had a slow start, falling 40-0 in his opening service game and giving Cina an early break. He recovered quickly and took control of the set, winning the last five games in a row and converting every break point he earned.

In the second set, De Jong took control as Cina became error-prone and struggled to keep up. Cina lost the last two games to love and gave the set away. The Italian managed only two return points and made 18 unforced errors, while De Jong had 15 return points and 6 unforced errors.

The third set started 66 minutes into the match. A fresh De Jong broke early again, but nearly gave the break back in his next service game. Cina had two break points, but an ace and an unforced error erased them. De Jong held serve with a winner and a forced error.

Cina played better toward the end of the set, but it was not enough to avoid a straight-sets loss. De Jong closed out the match in 109 minutes with his 11th ace, reaching the French Open third round for the first time in his career.

In the third round, De Jong will face world No. 13 Karen Khachanov.
