Otto Addo, former head coach of Ghana, has been appointed to FIFA’s Technical Study Group for the 2026 World Cup. He’ll join a lineup of football legends tasked with breaking down every match at the tournament in North America.

Addo’s new role puts him off the touchline and into one of the game’s most respected analytical positions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA confirmed that the ex-Ghana boss will be part of the Technical Study Group, working alongside a distinguished panel of football greats to analyse and evaluate the tournament.

Addo joins an impressive lineup of football figures on the 2026 Technical Study Group. His fellow analysts include Switzerland’s former goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbühler, Northern Ireland manager and tactical expert Michael O’Neill, and ex-Argentina and Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta.

Also on the panel are Brazilian World Cup winner and midfield stalwart Gilberto Silva, former Denmark striker and current coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, and Costa Rica legend Paulo Wanchope.

Rounding out the group are U.S. women’s football icon Tobin Heath, ex-Borussia Dortmund and Netherlands midfielder Aron Winter, former Germany and USA head coach Jürgen Klinsmann, and Jayne Ludlow, the Welsh football veteran and former Arsenal Women’s manager.

The German-born Ghanaian coach led the Black Stars to qualification for two consecutive FIFA World Cups.

But after suffering back-to-back losses during the March international break, the Ghana Football Association decided to part ways with Addo. Carlos Queiroz was later named as Ghana’s new head coach ahead of the World Cup.

Instead of watching the tournament from the sidelines, Addo now has a front-row seat in one of football’s most analytical roles.

Addo will be responsible for breaking down every match at the tournament, evaluating tactics, team setups, set-pieces, transitions, pressing approaches, and the growing role of performance data. A major part of his job is to spot the key trends that will influence how football evolves globally in the coming years.

The Technical Study Group’s conclusions are released in FIFA’s detailed Technical Reports. These are shared worldwide as coaching resources and are used by federations, coaches, and academies across every continent.

He’ll also help decide the tournament’s top individual awards, including the Golden Ball for best player, Golden Boot for top scorer, Golden Glove for best goalkeeper, and the Best Young Player prize.

Running from June 11 to July 19, the World Cup will see Addo watching matches that include Ghana’s campaign in Group L. His role, however, is to provide insight on tactical trends and structures across the whole tournament, not just on one team’s performance.
