Spain will be without Barcelona forward Fermin Lopez at the World Cup after he sustained a metatarsal fracture over the weekend.
The injury is a major blow for the European champions. López was a key part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad following an outstanding season with Barcelona that ended with a LaLiga title. He will now miss the tournament in North America.
The Huelva native was taken off at halftime of Sunday’s match against Betis after picking up a foot injury.
Barcelona released an official medical update on Monday confirming a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. He will require surgery and is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, ruling him out of the World Cup.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente is set to name his final 26-man squad next Monday, May 25th.
The player from El Campillo won both the European Championship and Olympic gold with Spain in 2024, and had targeted the upcoming World Cup for a chance at an international treble. He will now have to wait until 2030 for his first appearance at football’s biggest stage.
