West Ham United beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium to end a three-game winless run in the Premier League. The result was not enough to avoid relegation, as Tottenham’s win over Everton confirmed West Ham’s drop to the Championship.

A tense opening was expected given what was at stake, and the anxiety in the stands spilled onto the pitch. Leeds created the first chance in the 7th minute when Lukas Nmecha poked an effort wide of the goal.

West Ham looked short on urgency, and the home crowd made their frustration clear. The Hammers did not create their first chance until the 16th minute, when Pablo’s half-volley inside the box was headed over by Pascal Struijk.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side registered their first shot on target in the 23rd minute. Mateus Fernandes struck from distance, forcing Karl Darlow to parry the ball away.

Fernandes’ effort was one of the few bright spots for West Ham in a poor first half. They nearly fell behind in the 35th minute when Mads Hermansen rushed out to block Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot from six yards out.

The Englishman has scored 14 Premier League goals this season. He later saw a powerful shot blocked by Konstantinos Mavropanos, and James Justin fired into the side netting after a pass from Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds had already secured safety with a win over Burnley in April. Despite that, they looked more likely to score first until West Ham created two chances right before half-time.

Taty Castellanos headed over the bar first. Then El Hadji Malick Diouf delivered a cross that fell to Pablo, who hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Nuno made a change at half-time, bringing on Callum Wilson for Pablo. The veteran made an immediate impact after the break. He slipped a neat through ball to Taty, but the striker stumbled in the box and sent an off-balance, weak shot wide.

After missing several chances, Taty finally scored in the 66th minute. He headed Jarrod Bowen’s corner past Darlow to give West Ham a crucial lead.

West Ham stayed on top and made it 2-0 in the 78th minute. Bowen latched onto a superb through ball from Fernandes and finished brilliantly from a tight angle with his weaker right foot.

Wilson sealed the win in the 94th minute with a drilled strike from the edge of the box. The goal came just moments after he missed an easier chance.

West Ham played better after half-time and scored three goals, but it was not enough to stay up. Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Everton confirmed the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship.

West Ham will play in the second tier for the first time since the 2011/12 season. Leeds finished 14th in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup semi-final, marking a successful return to the top flight.
