Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea defeated China’s Wang Xinyu 6-3, 7-6(4) at the French Open on Sunday to reach her third Grand Slam quarter-final ever.

It’s Cirstea’s first Roland Garros last-eight run in 17 years. She’s set to retire at season’s end, but is playing the best tennis of her career after becoming the oldest player to crack the top 20 earlier this month.

The 36-year-old made two semis on the clay swing and stunned world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in Rome. She also became the oldest Open Era player to dish out a 6-0, 6-0 win in a Grand Slam main draw, doing it vs Solana Sierra in round three.

Cirstea controlled the first set, breaking twice to jump 5-1 ahead. Wang clawed back from 5-2 to push it to a tiebreak, but Cirstea kicked on again and closed it out in 84 minutes.
