Game 2 Recap & Highlights

Carolina opened the scoring in under two minutes with the game’s first shot on goal. Eric Robinson netted his second goal of the playoffs to put the Hurricanes up 1-0. Both of his postseason goals have come in this series against Montreal. William Carrier and Mark Jankowski recorded their second assists of the playoffs on the play.

Six minutes later, Montreal got the first power play but failed to convert. The Canadiens tied it 1-1 at even strength when Josh Anderson scored his fourth goal of the postseason less than a minute after the power play ended. Phillip Danault and Kaiden Guhle picked up the assists.

Carolina led 7-2 in shots and 13-6 in hits at the first intermission. Montreal headed to the locker room with time still left on their second power play of the game.

The Canadiens caught a break in the final seconds of the period. Carolina had a 2-on-1 shorthanded chance, but Seth Jarvis, who scored the first goal of the series, missed the net.

With under three minutes left in the period and another failed power play for Montreal, the Hurricanes went back ahead. Nikolaj Ehlers scored a slick goal for his third of the postseason to make it 2-1. Jacob Slavin and Jalen Chatfield both picked up their second assists of the playoffs.

After a penalty late in the second period, Montreal started the third down a man and trailing 35-15 in hits. The Canadiens had only five shots on goal at that point.

Alexandre Texier was called for a minor penalty for slashing after hitting K'Andre Miller in the groin. Some thought the play deserved a five-minute major instead.

With under eight minutes remaining in the third period, Montreal scored for the second time on just their ninth shot of the game.

Josh Anderson, who had 13 goals in the regular season, netted his second of the night and fifth of the playoffs to tie it 2-2. Alexandre Carrier earned his sixth assist of the postseason, and Phillip Danault recorded his second assist of the game and eighth overall.

Montreal managed seven shots in the third period, more than they had in the first two periods combined. Carolina still led 24-12 in shots and 44-16 in hits heading into overtime.

The Hurricanes ultimately took the win in overtime. Both teams finished 0-for-5 on the power play, and no penalties were called in the third period or overtime.

Montreal registered seven shots on goal in the third period, surpassing their total from the first two periods combined. Even so, Carolina held a 24-12 edge in shots and a 44-16 advantage in hits going into overtime.

The Hurricanes came out on top in the extra frame, sending the series to Game 3. Neither team converted on the power play, finishing a combined 0-for-5, and no penalties were called in the third period or overtime.
