Dortmund completed a first-half turnaround to beat Frankfurt 3-2, clinching second place and crossing 70 points as Frankfurt’s European qualification hopes fade.
Dortmund rallied from an early deficit to beat Frankfurt 3-2, passing 70 points and leaving Die Adler needing a Freiburg slip to keep European hopes alive...
Borussia Dortmund clinched second in the Bundesliga for the fifth time in eight seasons with a 3-2 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, dealing a blow to Die Adler’s chances of reaching the UEFA Conference League.
Frankfurt opened the scoring in the second minute, continuing their scoring form in a 30th league game out of 33 this season and catching the struggling hosts off guard right from the start.
Mahmoud Dahoud battled to retain possession near the edge of the area and set up Can Uzun, who curled a precise shot into the far bottom corner.
Frankfurt’s climb past Freiburg into seventh lasted only briefly, as missed opportunities for Marcel Sabitzer and Samuele Inacio hinted at Dortmund’s comeback before the break.
With second place the only prize left to play for, the hosts leveled when Julian Ryerson’s low, driven cross from the right found Serhou Guirassy at the near post, and he redirected it into the top corner past Michael Zetterer.
Dortmund completed the turnaround just minutes later in first-half stoppage time when Maximilian Beier picked out an unmarked Nico Schlotterbeck in a crowded box, allowing the defender to slot a low shot inside the far post.
Frankfurt looked sharper after the break, but Fares Chaibi’s finish past Gregor Kobel was ruled out for a marginal offside.
Any chance of a Frankfurt comeback was snuffed out when Beier delivered another cross from the left, with Inácio tapping in from close range for his first goal for Dortmund past Zetterer.
Inácio’s goal carried extra meaning as a sign of a possible new chapter for Die Schwarzgelben, with Julian Brandt making his final appearance at the Westfalenstadion for Dortmund shortly after.
What looked set to be a comfortable win for Dortmund came under late pressure when Ansgar Knauff teed up substitute Jonathan Burkardt, but the visitors couldn’t find another equalizer.

Dortmund overcame their recent dip in form to secure second place in the Bundesliga and surpass 70 points for only the second time in seven seasons. For Albert Riera’s Frankfurt side, the outlook is tougher; a Freiburg win on Sunday would end their hopes of European football for a sixth straight year.
