Bundesliga: 10-Man Stuttgart Snatch 95th-Minute Equalizer in Thriller at Hoffenheim

Kramaric brace not enough as Stuttgart stun Hoffenheim with last-gasp goal

Andrej Kramaric scored twice to put Hoffenheim 3-1 up before Stuttgart fought back. Both teams are now three points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen in the table. Hoffenheim had won 12 of 13 league games when leading at half-time this season.

Stuttgart snatched a 3-3 draw at Hoffenheim with a 95th-minute equalizer despite playing most of the second half with 10 men. Hoffenheim let a 3-1 lead slip and missed the chance to move three points clear in the Bundesliga’s battle for fourth. Stuttgart stay fifth for now.  

 

Hoffenheim came into the game with back-to-back 2-1 wins after a five-match winless run, and they carried that momentum into the opener, striking in the 8th minute in Kraichgau.

Fisnik Asllani set up the opener with a smart cutback to Andrej Kramarić, who slotted calmly into the bottom left corner.  

Stuttgart responded in the 20th minute with a quick break. Ramon Hendriks overlapped with Chris Führich, and the midfielder chipped the ball over the keeper to quiet the PreZero Arena.  

  

The silence didn’t last long. Bazoumana Touré put Hoffenheim back ahead three minutes later, pouncing on a rebound and firing into the bottom right corner from just outside the box.

The rest of the half produced a few flashes but no more goals. Hoffenheim took a 2-1 lead into the break, the 14th time they’ve led at half-time this season. It’s a strong sign given they’d won 12 of the previous 13 games in that situation.  

Hoffenheim looked in control two minutes after the restart when Kramarić made it 3-1. He tapped in Touré’s square ball at the far post for his 23rd Bundesliga brace of the season and second in three matchdays, after the Ivorian controlled a long ball down the line and cut it back.

Asllani and Tim Lemperle both went close to making it 4-1, with Asllani denied by a header save and Lemperle hitting the woodwork. In between, Führich forced a stop after a shot that flew just over.  

Stuttgart cut the deficit in the 67th minute. Führich switched play to the right, Jamie Leweling drove forward and pulled it back for Ermedin Demirović to finish at the far post, giving Stuttgart a lifeline in the race for fourth.  

Stuttgart’s comeback hopes were dented when captain Atakan Karazor was sent off for a cynical trip on Asllani. Referee Sascha Stegemann showed a straight red after Karazor kicked Asllani’s Achilles while chasing him down.

Both sides are now only three points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, leaving the race for fourth wide open. Attention shifts to the BayArena, where Hoffenheim and Stuttgart will hope RB Leipzig can take points off Leverkusen.
