Bournemouth kept their Champions League qualification hopes alive with a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium. The result meant Pep Guardiola’s side dropped the Premier League title to Arsenal, giving the Gunners their first league championship since 2004.

Reports that Guardiola might leave City soon dominated the buildup to the match. City had hoped to take the title race to the final day, but the draw ended those plans.

Bournemouth created their first chance when Antoine Semenyo ran down the right and set up Jeremy Doku. Doku’s left-footed shot was saved comfortably by Dorde Petrovic.

Semenyo later put the ball in the net against his former club, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the linesman’s flag.

Evanilson missed a close-range shot and sent it over the bar. He avoided embarrassment though, as he was also flagged offside.

City had most of the possession and chances. Erling Haaland’s left-footed strike was deflected behind by Evanilson after the Brazilian cleared Rodri’s header from Bernardo Silva’s corner.

It was Iraola’s side who scored first. The goal would have been celebrated in North London as much as in Dorset. Junior Kroupi controlled Adrien Truffert’s pass, opened his body, and curled a right-footed shot past a motionless Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Arsenal’s celebrations were on hold, but they might have had to pause them again if Petrovic hadn’t made a strong save to deny Nico O’Reilly from close range just after halftime.

City fans expecting a barrage on Bournemouth’s goal were left disappointed.

Surprisingly, the Cherries didn’t sit deep and defend like most teams would with a lead against City. Donnarumma had to parry away Adrien Truffert’s strike, and Kroupi fired over the bar from Evanilson’s backheel after a slick passing move.

Rayan came close to becoming only the fourth teenager to score in four straight Premier League games. He reacted to James Hill’s knockdown with a sliding shot that hit the post.

David Brooks had a chance to extend the lead late on, but his shot also struck the woodwork in the closing minutes.

Guardiola’s side had the final say, equalizing late when Haaland’s angled shot deflected in off the post. It wasn’t enough for a second goal though, and with the title gone, the celebrations started at the Emirates.

City’s point meant little in the bigger picture after losing the title race. The season ends with mixed results for Guardiola’s side. They won both domestic cups but missed out on the Premier League and Champions League.

Bournemouth can look back on a season of real progress. They are unbeaten in 17 Premier League games with 9 wins and 8 draws, and have at least secured Europa League football for next season.

Champions League qualification is still possible for them. If it happens, it would cap off Iraola’s time at the club before he departs at the end of this week.
