Barcelona battled to a 2-1 victory over Osasuna at El Sadar, moving closer to the LaLiga title and leaving them in position to clinch it against Real Madrid next weekend.

Robert Lewandowski had Barcelona’s best chance in the opening minutes, but his powerful strike curled just wide of the post.

Dani Olmo’s constant movement and work rate unsettled Osasuna in front of their home crowd. For Los Rojillos, Ante Budimir managed only two half-chances in the opening 20 minutes.

Javi Galan cleared off the line with a header to stop Eric García from scoring, and moments later Sergio Herrera dived low to keep out Roony Bardghji’s long-range effort.

Both teams pushed forward as the half-hour mark approached, but neither created many clear-cut openings in front of goal.

Barcelona created the better openings but repeatedly let themselves down with poor final passes, and only the post denied Budimir after he weaved from halfway and stabbed a shot goalward. Joao Cancelo’s sloppy pass right before the break summed up the visitors’ casual approach, and it was the last action of a goalless first half.

Olmo will wonder how he blazed over from a few yards out just after the restart. Barça played with more urgency and width after the break, moving Osasuna from left to right more effectively.

Possession dominance didn’t bring a finish, with the visitors holding 73.2% of the ball in the 15 minutes after half-time. At the other end, only an outstretched palm from Joan García stopped Osasuna’s Ruben from curling his side in front.

With the game heading into its closing stages, Osasuna were pinned back as Barca pressed for a breakthrough. Ten minutes from time, Marcus Rashford delivered a precise cross for Robert Lewandowski to rise and head home, giving the visitors a crucial lead.

Ferran Torres doubled the advantage in the 86th minute with a well-placed finish, but Osasuna pulled one back almost immediately. Raul García outjumped the Barca defence to power in a header of his own.

The goal proved to be only a consolation. Osasuna have now won just two of their last nine league matches, drawing three and losing four. Barca moved 14 points clear of Real Madrid at the top, at least for the time being.
