Arne Slot Explains Ngumoha Substitution After Anfield Boos in Chelsea Draw

Liverpool fans boo as Slot’s Ngumoha call backfires in frustrating draw

Liverpool dropped more points at Anfield after a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, with boos greeting both the Ngumoha substitution and the final whistle.

Liverpool conceded their 18th set-piece goal of the season in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, extending a frustrating run at Anfield...

Arne Slot downplayed the angry reaction from Anfield after he substituted Rio Ngumoha in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Saturday. The Liverpool boss said the 17-year-old had picked up a muscle issue and had to come off.

Ngumoha was one of the few bright spots for Liverpool on a frustrating day at Anfield, where fans also voiced their displeasure with boos at full-time after another dropped points.

The teenager was taken off in the 67th minute for Alexander Isak, a change that drew an immediate negative reaction from the home crowd.

“There were a lot that didn't agree ‌with the change, which is completely understandable,” Slot told TNT Sports. “He ‌was having problems with his muscles and when I asked him, he said he was not sure he could continue.

“I knew this would be the reaction because he is such a good player. So often in football, people don't know everything. I am the manager and I need to make decisions. Knowing why means it make more sense for people.”

Liverpool could have been 2-0 ahead before Chelsea took control, but the hosts once again conceded from a set-piece – their 18th of the season, a tally only Bournemouth’s 19 exceeds.

“We started off really well and got a big chance from a set-piece which was close to making it 2-0,” Slot said. “Unfortunately, like last week (at Manchester United), we conceded from a set piece. It was such a sloppy goal.

“The second half I saw a completely different intensity. We went close a ‌few times. Like so many times this season, we hit the post and bar. We were not ‌able to control their players. They played with a lot of midfielders today.”

Boos rang out again at the final whistle after Liverpool couldn’t find a late winner.

“That's probably got something to do with us not winning. It completely makes sense, people are disappointed if ‌Liverpool don't win,” Slot said.
