Zverev Survives Kecmanovic Test to Start Munich Title Defense

Alexander Zverev battled past Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) in the ATP Munich first round on Tuesday.
The defending champion looked comfortable after claiming the opening set, but the world No. 3 was undone by unforced errors as Kecmanovic dug in
“Today is a very cold day so it was difficult to put on the pressure. At the end of the day, I'm happy I won,” Zverev said.

“Now we can get started. I can't play any worse than I did in the second and third sets today. But I played my best tennis in the crucial moments, which is the main thing.”
World No. 58 Kecmanovic hit back to take the second set and pushed the top seed to a deciding tiebreak.
In cold, windy conditions in Munich, Zverev finally closed out Kecmanovic after 2 hours and 18 minutes.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, No. 6 seed Luciano Darderi overcame China’s Zhang Zhizhen 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1, while Denis Shapovalov knocked out No. 8 seed Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Flavio Cobolli and Joao Fonseca also advanced to the second round in straight sets.
